Este número de Alasbimn Journal se publica después del Congreso de EANM en París, Septiembre del 2000 y antes del Congreso de Alasbimn en Porto, Portugal en Octubre del 2000. El alto nivel de la Medicina Nuclear europea quedó evidenciado en París, si bien 56% de los trabajos eran de origen europeo y el resto de países europeos fuera de la Unión Europea, América del Norte, Asía y América del Sur etc. Aproximadamente 1800 trabajos fueron presentados de los cuales 480 fueron en presentaciones orales. Los temas de mayor interés como en el Congreso norteamericano de San Louis fueron Oncología, Cardiología y Neuropsiquiatría. Sin duda alguna las presentaciones en formato de revisión de temas y de Formación Continuada fueron las que contaron con la asistencia mayor de 3000 profesionales y 1.800 personas relacionadas con la industria. Así es que este gran evento científico se acerco en magnitud al Congreso Americano que se celebró en St. Louis en Junio recién pasado.

En el área de Neuropsiquiatría el tema de mayor interés y novedad se relacionó con el diagnóstico precoz de enfermedad de Parkinson mediante la imagenología del Transportador de Dopamina DAT que fue lanzado para el medio Americano y Europeo con el marcador I-123 por la firma Dycomed-Amersham DAT-SCAN. En esta misma área se presentaron trabajos experimentales mediante el Radiofármaco TRODAT Tc-99m que ofrece grandes posibilidades para nuestro medio ya que es marcable con Tc99m en nuestros laboratorios ya que está disponible en forma de Kit.

En otro ámbito hemos obtenido con el apoyo de SISIB, Universidad de Chile la primera fase hacia indexación necesaria para los reconocimientos de las publicaciones científicas que se editan en Alasbimn Journal. En efecto hemos sido indexados en LILAC (Literatura Latinoamericana y del Caribe en Ciencias de la Salud ).

Estamos orgullosos de este reconocimientos y haremos todo lo posible para que las mayores agencias de indexación como son Index Médicus y Medline. reconozcan también a nuestra revista a su debido tiempo.

En este número, el 1º del tercer año de publicación de Alasbimn Journal presentamos a nuestros lectores un formato especial: En efecto publicamos todos los abstracts de trabajos que se presentarán en el Congreso de Alasbimn que se llevará a efecto en Porto, Portugal durante este mes de Octubre. Es un congreso Iberoamericano en que se destacan importantes contribuciones en el área de Neuropsiquiatría, Oncología y Cardiología: Los trabajos relacionados con imagenología de la enfermedad de Parkinson son de sumo interés.

Igualmente publicamos la contribución latinoamericana y del Profesor Coleman a la reunión conjunta de SNM-Alasbimn que se llevó a cabo durante el congreso de St. Louis. en Junio pasado. Fue una iniciativa novedosa, coordinada por los Drs. Sylvia Vazquez, Presidente de Alasbimn y por el Prof. Camargo de Brasil. Se destacan las contribuciones de los profesores Camargo y Meneghetti de Brasil, González de Chile y Coleman de USA. El material se presenta en formato de Powerpoint, lo que le da un énfasis especialmente gráfico.

Además publicamos una contribución científica en forma de Informe final del proyecto de FDG F18 en infarto del miocardio de la Universidad de Chile que constituye un análisis de posibilidades en un tema importante de la Cardiología Nuclear.

La sección Tecnología en Medicina Nuclear presenta un muy útil y completo listado de protocolos estandarizados para el trabajo de SPECT, lo que será por cierto de gran utilidad en nuestro medio latinoamericano. De Cuba nos llega un revisión sobre el tema dosimetría de tumores que ha sido abordado en forma completa y rigurosa. Por último publicamos en este número un excelente caso de hallazgos óseos en Talasemía mayor que ha sido ilustrado con excelentes imágenes y buena adecuada bibliográfica. Instamos a nuestros lectores a enviarnos este tipo de material que es de gran interés y constituye una excelente forma de educación continuada para nuestros lectores.

Iniciamos así las publicaciones del tercer año de Alasbimn Journal en formato electrónico con espléndida aceptación de nuestra audiencia, con el apoyo leal de nuestros auspiciadores y patrocinantes que esperamos vayan creciendo en número, hasta que obtengamos solvencia e independencia económica completa. Por ahora nos resta agradecer a la Sociedad Chilena de Medicina Nuclear que se ha responsabilizado por garantizar la publicación de nuestra revista.

Queremos reiterar que el reconocimiento de LILAC en la indexación de Alasbimn Journal entre las revistas científicas latinoamericanas es un primer paso importante y esencial para el reconocimiento ulterior por las agencias de indexación mayor. La revista esta indexada además en la totalidad de los motores de búsqueda de la Internet y en AMADEO, el índice de revistas mundiales de circulación gratuita en la Internet.

En esta oportunidad deseamos solicitar a la Asamblea de Alasbimn, que se llevara a cabo en Porto, Portugal tenga a bien reconsiderar al Ingles entre los idiomas oficiales de Alasbimn. Esta solicitud esta justificada ya que debemos promover entre nuestros investigadores jóvenes la publicación de sus trabajos en Alasbimn Journal en idioma ingles ya que la mayoría de nuestros lectores son originarios de USA y Europa, siendo USA el país #1 en lectores de nuestra Revista. Deseamos solicitar además, que la publicación de abstracts de los trabajos a presentarse en el Congreso de Alasbimn de 2002 sea efectuada en forma virtual en Alasbimn Journal, nuestro órgano oficial.

Reiteramos además nuestro interés en publicar todos los trabajos premiados en el Congreso de Porto y en el año 2002 en Santiago.

Al cierre de esta Edición tuvimos noticia del sensible fallecimiento del Prof. Leslie R. Bennett MD, Profesor Emérito de Ciencias Radiológicas de la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad de California, Los Angeles. El Profesor Bennett fue un constante promotor de la Medicina Nuclear en Latino América apoyando generosamente el intercambio desde y hacia nuestros países y constituyéndose en una figura legendaria y muy querida en nuestros Congresos regionales. Su hospitalidad para todos nosotros fue inolvidable y constituyó en muchos casos un apoyo decisivo a los que iniciábamos nuestros primeros pasos en la gran Universidad de UCLA. En esta actividad desinteresada tuvo siempre el apoyo irrestricto de su esposa Vera, a quien hacemos llegar junto a sus cuatro hijos y sus familias nuestras mas sinceras condolencias.

This number of Alasbimn Journal is published after the Paris Congress of EANM and before the October Congress of Alasbimn in Porto Portugal. The high level of European Nuclear Medicine was demonstrated in Paris, while 56% of the papers presented were of scientists from the European Union and the rest from European countries outside the Union, from USA, Asia and Latin America. Approximately 480 of 1800 papers presented were orally discussed with an audience of 3000 physicians and scientists and 1800 attendees from industry related activities. The subjects of major interest, like in St. Louis meeting of SNM, were Oncology, Cardiology and Neuropsychiatry. Presentations in the format of Scientific Reviews and Continuing Education attracted the majority of the audiences. Thus, this magnificent scientific event approached in magnitude, very nearly the numbers attending the St. Louis SNM Congress last June.

In the area of Neuro-Psychiatry there was great interest in the use of Dopamine Transporter Imaging Agents (DAT), labeled with I123 for the Early Diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease. The product was introduced for Europe and North America by Dycomed-Amersham with the trade name of DATScan. In the same area there was discussion of papers addressing the same clinical problem by means of DAT imaging with Trodat Tc99m, that offers for our environment the logistic advantage of in house labeling with Tc99m as it is available in form of a kit.

In a different venue we are proud to announce that Alasbimn Journal has been Indexed by LILAC (Latin American and Caribbean Literature of Health Sciences). This recognition was gathered with the support of Sisib, University of Chile to whom we are indebted. We are certain that this initial indexing will help ulterior Indexing by major agencies such as Index Medicus and Medline. In the mean time Alasbimn Journal has been inscribed with all major Internet Search Engines and with AMADEO, the listing of free Internet Journals.

This First Issue of the Third Year of Alasbimn Journal is published in a special format: we are presenting all abstracts that will be discussed in the Alasbimn Congress, in Porto, Portugal this October. This is an Ibero-American Congress with emphasis in Oncology, Cardiology and Neuro-Psychiatry. In this latter area there will be presented several interesting papers on Early Diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease, coinciding with the interest presented in Paris.

In this issue we publish also in Power Point format,( major emphasis in graphic display ), the presentations to the First Joint Latin American/SNM Conference that took place in St. Louis last June. We present the lectures of Profs. Camargo and Meneghetti from Brazil, P. Gonzalez from Chile and Coleman from USA. The meeting was coordinated by Drs. Silvia Vasquez, President of Alasbimn and Prof. Camargo from Brazil. This was a new initiative, that was highly successful and we are certain will be followed by other events like this in the near future.

We publish also a scientific contribution in the form of a Final Report of Research performed at University of Chile analyzing the rol of FDG F18 in the Diagnosis and Management of Myocardial Infarction. This is a complete document on an important subject of Nuclear Cardiology.

In the Section Nuclear Medicine Technology we publish a complete and well documented

Series of Protocols for the Performance of Spect Studies. We are certain that this is a major contribution for the achievement of high standards in Latin American Nuclear Medicine. From Cuba we are presenting a paper on Dosimetry of Tumors that is a Review in depth and presented with rigurosity. We present also a Clinical Case of Bone involvement in Thalassemia Major. This is a well-developed issue, illustrated with excellent images and good literature review. We urge other Latin-American young scientists to publish their interesting cases in Alasbimn Journal and contribute this way to Continuing Education in our Continent.

We begin the publication of the third year of Alasbimn Journal with optimism due to an excellent readership throughout the world and with faithful support of our Commercial Partners. We expect the number of supporters will increase and provide full economic independence. In the mean time we thank the Chilean Society of Nuclear Medicine that supports the balance for the publication of Alasbimn Journal.

In this opportunity we wish to request from the Alasbimn Assembly that will convene in Porto, this month to include among the official languages of Alasbimn, English as this will facilitate and promote the publication by young investigators of their papers in English in the Alasbimn Journal. This is fully justified if we consider that the majority of readers of our Alasbimn Journal are from English speaking countries, and among them USA is #1. We wish to request also that the publication of abstracts of the Alasbimn Congress in 2002 be continued in virtual format in Alasbimn Journal. We reiterate our interest of publishing all awarded papers presented in Porto and in 2002 in Santiago.

At the time of closure of this Edition we received the regrettable news that Prof. Leslie R. Bennett MD had passed away at the UCLA Center of the Health Sciences on September 20, 2000. Professor Bob Bennett was an Emeritus Professor of Radiological Sciences at the UCLA School of Medicine and became actively involved promoting constantly and generously Nuclear Medicine exchanges to and from Latin America since the Decade of the 50s. Thus, becoming a legendary and much beloved figure at our Regional Congresses. His hospitality was traditional among Latin American Nuclear Medicine scientists and in many cases it provided the necessary support to those that initiated their first steps at the great University of UCLA. In this generous and creative activity he had always the unrestricted support of his wife Vera to whom and to their four children and their families we extend our most sincere condolences.

We wish a great Congress of Alasbimn and much success to the attendees and presenters to the Congress in Porto, Portugal. Respectfully submitted.
