NUESTRA REVISTA: SU CUARTA ETAPA

Con gran orgullo para la Medicina Nuclear latinoamericana, y en particular para la Sociedad Chilena de Medicina Nuclear, recibimos el número aniversario correspondiente al segundo año de publicación de ALASBIMN JOURNAL en lo que constituye la cuarta etapa de desarrollo del órgano oficial de ALASBIMN.

Después de más de treinta años, hoy nos parecen lejanos y dignos de gran admiración aquellos días, al final de la década de 1960, cuando el coraje y visión de futuro de nuestros pioneros permitió la fundación de la Revista de Biología y Medicina Nuclear como órgano oficial de la Asociación. Pasados ya más de treinta años desde entonces hoy nos parece aun más destacable la labor cumplida fundamentalmente por los hermanos Juan José y Eduardo Touya al publicar exitosamente la revista en su primera etapa en Montevideo, Uruguay.

Las dos etapas siguientes están marcadas por la lucha implacable entre nuestros sueños y la realidad económica. Conocimos muy de cerca los esfuerzos realizados por el Dr. Osvaldo Degrossi y sus colegas de Argentina para mantener viva la Revista. Pero, finalmente ella debió suspenderse y utilizar la Revista Española de Medicina Nuclear como nuestro órgano oficial gracias a la valiosa cooperación de la Sociedad Española. Esta tercera etapa nuevamente sufrió el embate del alza de los costos de producción y distribución lo que inexorablemente nos obligó a buscar nuevas alternativas.

Como partes integrantes de un continente ávido de desarrollo nos consideramos representantes de una digna clase media de la comunidad científica mundial. Muchas veces la adversidad vivida en nuestros países se constituye en un estimulo a la creatividad y logramos, finalmente, obtener soluciones acordes con nuestros propios recursos y realidades. De este modo la Sociedad Chilena de Medicina Nuclear presentó un proyecto altamente eficiente y moderno para utilizar las nuevas técnicas comunicacionales, que con toda seguridad marcarán el camino de las publicaciones médicas futuras, a través del uso de Internet. La Asamblea de Delegados de ALASBIMN, reunida en Lima, Perú en 1997, confió en este proyectó designando al Dr. Ismael Mena como Editor Jefe de una nueva revista para esta cuarta etapa del órgano oficial de expresión de la Asociación. Al año siguiente, con la genialidad y capacidad de organización del Dr. Mena, pudimos disfrutar del primer número virtual de ALASBIMN JOURNAL en un formato exclusivamente electrónico y bilingüe. Hoy creemos que este proyecto se encuentra plenamente consolidado y cumpliendo más allá de las expectativas iniciales. Su calidad científica es destacable y ha pasado a ser una revista altamente consultada incluso más allá de las fronteras iberoamericanas.

Algunas empresas relacionadas con nuestro quehacer han comprendido el valor que tiene el mantener un órgano de difusión como éste permitiendo su financiamiento mediante sus valiosos aportes. Esto ha significado instaurar una nueva y moderna forma de publicidad mediante la conexión directa de los lectores a las páginas "web" de las empresas colaboradoras. Desde allí podemos obtener la más completa información de sus productos y a su vez trasformar a la revista como un órgano de difusión de los avances tecnológicos en el mercado.

Así han transcurrido cuatro etapas de nuestra revista a través de las cuales hemos tenido la suerte de compartir nuestras experiencias y aprender de muchos que han querido colaborar con nuestro proyecto. Cada etapa ha tenido sus virtudes y debilidades, creo que el balance ha sido claramente favorable hacia las primeras, principalmente por la impronta de cada uno de los Editores Jefes. En este número de especial significado permítanme agradecer y felicitar al Dr. Ismael Mena por su extraordinaria dedicación a la revista. La alta calidad tanto técnica como científica de nuestra publicación nos llena de orgullo y nos asegura un promisorio futuro.

Esperamos muy pronto que ALASBIMN JOURNAL sea incorporado al Index Medicus y a Medline al cumplir con los requisitos de las nuevas normativas para publicaciones electrónicas. Este hecho será un nuevo y gran estímulo para que los investigadores no sólo de Latinoamérica sino del resto del mundo prefieran publicar en ella. Los invito a seguir participando activamente, ya sea como lectores o colaboradores científicos, enviando sus artículos de investigación o experiencias clínicas al comité editorial.

With great pride Latin American Nuclear Medicine and in particular, the Chilean Society of Nuclear Medicine is completing the second year of publication of ALASBIMN Journal, in its fourth stage of development as the official Journal of ALASBIMN.

More than 30 years ago, at the end of the decade of 1960´s, at a time that appears remote and deserving all of our admiration our pioneers, with courage and vision of the future founded the Journal of Biology and Nuclear Medicine as the official Journal of our Association of Societies of Nuclear Medicine. Thirty years later we admire the initial efforts of the Touya brothers, Juan José and Eduardo that published successfully the Journal in its first stage in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The next two stages are clearly influenced by the on-going and enduring battle between our dreams and our economic reality.

We acknowledge with insight the efforts performed by Dr. Degrossi and his argentinian colleagues in order to keep alive our Journal, but finally the publication had to be discontinued and replaced by a Section in the Revista Española de Medicina Nuclear. It became our official publication thanks to the valuable cooperation of the Spanish Society of Nuclear Medicine. This third stage later suffered an onslaught of increase of cost of production and distribution that eventually led us to find new alternatives.

We are an integral part of a continent that is thirsty for development and we consider ourselves representatives of a dignified middle-class of the world´s scientific community. Many times, the adversity that our countries have suffered became a trigger, a stimulus for creativity and we demonstrated thet we are able of developing solutions that are in accord with our resources and reality. For this reason, the Chilean Society of Nuclear Medicine presented a project to the Assembly of Alasbimn for the publication of the New ALASBIMN JOURNAL, that was both efficient and modern, utilizing the different means of communication, mainly Internet. This solution I am certain will lead the way for many publications in the future. The Assembly of Delegates of ALASBIMN in 1997 in Lima, accepted this project and designated Dr. Ismael Mena as the Editor-in-Chief for the official publication of our association and this constitutes the fourth stage of publication of our Journal. A year later, the geniality and organization capability of Dr. Mena produced the first issue of the virtual ALASBIMN Journal in a bilingual exclusively electronic format. We believe today that this project is completely consolidated and more than fulfilled the initial expectation. The scientific quality of the paper is commendable and the Journal is frequently consulted beyond the American boundaries.

Several commercial enterprises related to our work in Nuclear Medicine have understood the value, the importance of keeping this Journal viable and we have requested from them financial support for our publication. This has been implemented by a new modality consistent of a direct linkage of our readership to the Web pages of our financial partners. By this mechanism, we can gather the complete information of their product and at the same time the Journal becomes a mechanism of information of the technological advances of the market.

This way, the fourth stages of the evolution of our Journal have evolved in a sharing of our experiences and learning from the many that have agreed to cooperate and support our project. Each stage had its virtues and drawbacks, but I believe that the balance is clearly favorable toward the first one, particularly by the zeal that was ingrained by each of the Editors-in-Chief. In this issue of special significance we would like to thank and congratulate Dr. Ismael Mena for his extraordinary dedication to our Journal. The high quality of the scientific and technical characteristics of this publication makes us full of pride and is a guaranty of a bright future. We expect that soon ALASBIMN Journal will be incorporated to the Index Medicus and Medline once it complies with the new requisites for electronic publications. This accomplishment will be a new and significant stimulus not only for Latin America but also for investigators from the rest of the world that may choose ALASBIMN Journal as the site of publication of their scientific contributions. I invite all of you to continue participating actively as readers or scientific authors by sending your research articles or clinical reviews for publication at ALASBIMN JOURNAL.
