11.1 - SAMARIUM-153 & EDTMP CYTOGENETIC EFFECTS IN PATIENTS WITH CANCER AND RHEUMATOID ARTHRITS ONE HOUR AFTER DOSE ADMINISTRATION

Samarium-153- EDTMP has been successfully used for pain palliation in metastatic bone cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. The purpose of this study was to observe Sm-53-EDTMP effects in human peripheral lymphocytes. The blood samples were obtained from 4 patients. One blood sample was from rheumatoid arthritis and the other three from patients with prostate cancer. The blood samples (5ml), were collected before and one hour after the intravenous injection (37MBq), of Sm-153-EDTMP. The cells were incubated during 48 hours in a temperature of 370C in 1640 RPMI medium, with 10% bovine fetal serum and phytohaemagglutinin treated with colchicine hypotonic, fixed and stained. The preliminary results, showed that cancer patients, had up to 3,2 times more chromosomal aberrations, compared to the pre dose condition. The patient with rheumatoid arthritis showed 1,5 more cell aberrations. Besides the presence of the structural aberrations, some metaphases were found with endoreduplication and tetraploidy. The preliminary study suggests that Sm-153-EDTMP may induce some cytogenetic effects, however, a higher number of patients are necessary to statistically validate these results.

11.2 - DEVELOPMENT OF THE APPLICATED PROGRAM TO CALCULATE VOLUMES THROUGHOUT MONTE CARLO METHOD TO USE IN INTERNAL DOSIMETRY CALCULATIONS

A program was developed throughout the Monte Carlo method variant, for volume calculations of the regions and organs of human body, based in two mathematical models: international reference man and the Brazilian man. A special system was created and it permits the user, to obtain the volume of the wished organs, in specific and undefined models. For then, the user will require to give the variables of the localization of the interesting region, throughout the parameters of the organ, whose volume must be estimated, generating then a hypothetical geometric solid. The system generate spatial points in this region, making a scanner in the axis and a verification in the localization of the points, verified if the points are in or out of the target organ. The verification is made throughout the geometrical interpretation of the integral variation, using the Monte Carlo method. After the generation and counting of the points that are in the interesting region, is obtained the estimation of the organ volume. The system is simple because is executed in WINDOWS 95/98 © and is required a PC - 586 computer or larger. The program has a great utility in research and mathematical studies for the calculations about volumes of the simple and complex solids.
