The Eighth World Congress of Nuclear Medicine.

This Special Issue of Alasbimn Journal celebrates the Eighth World Congress of Nuclear Medicine and the 18th Congress of Alasbimn. While the history of the WFNMB Congresses began in Kyoto, Japan in 1974 with uninterrupted meetings every 4 years, the Alasbimn Congresses take place every other year. The process of organization of these Congresses is elaborate and complex. This Chile Congress was designated in Kyoto, Japan in 1996. The responsibility of Latin America and Chile in particular to host such an important Congress was assumed immediately thereafter and with the enthusiastic support of several International committees a superb Continued Education Program was designed. Alasbimn is thankful for the generous contributions of many scientists from many countries of the world to the endeavor of teaching Nuclear Medicine Physicians in the rapidly expanding field of Nuclear Medicine.

Since its inception, Nuclear Medicine had to face apparently insurmountable competition from new imaging developments such as Computed Tomography during the early 70´s and later on from MRI. MRI techniques initially were menacing to the survival of Nuclear Medicine. However, the concept of functional imaging, complementing the high resolution structural imaging techniques gained acceptance and today we witness in this Congress the full blossoming of Nuclear Cardiology, one good example of the power of functional imaging. Brain imaging in Neurology and Psychiatry is rapidly getting into maturity with the new 3D statistical imaging display. Oncology I the new branch of Nuclear Medicine where PET and SPECT techniques contribute to the early diagnosis of cancer and receptor imaging.. This area is particularly strongly represented in the Congress. In this issue we publish 706 abstracts that will be presented in oral or posters sessions. This defining the many areas of Nuclear Medicine receiving strong contributors from throughout the World.

Alasbimn is particularly thankful to the faculty of the excellent continued Medical Education Programs, to the Authors of original scientific material to be presented at the Scientific Sessions, to the moderators, and co-moderators that have offered their support generously and provided the superb opportunity of exchange and refreshment of knowledge to our large and broad geographic origin constituency. We wish that this very important material will be readily available to you before, during and after the Congress for consultation and guidance during your attendance to the scientific sessions.

El 8º Congreso Mundial de Medicina Nuclear.

En este número especial de Alasbimn Journal celebramos la realización del 8º Congreso Mundial de Medicina Nuclear y el 18º Congreso de Alasbimn. La historia de los congresos de la Federación Mundial de Medicina Nuclear (WFNMB) se inició en Kioto, Japón en 1974 y se ha continuado ininterrumpidamente con Congresos cada 4 años, mientras los congresos de Alasbimn se realizan cada 2 años. El proceso de organización de estos congresos es elaborado y complejo. El congreso de WFNMB en Chile fue designado en Kioto, Japón en 1996. La responsabilidad de Chile y por ende de América Latina al co-celebrarlo con el Congreso de Alasbimn se hizo manifiesta iniciando inmediatamente después de la reunión de Kioto su organización. Con el apoyo entusiasta y generoso de varios Comité Internacionales se organizó un programa doble de educación continuada de características extraordinarias. Chile y Alasbimn están agradecidos especialmente de la colaboración generosa de tantos científicos de diversos sitios en el mundo que a pesar de los momentos difíciles por que atraviesan diversos Continentes en este momento han participado en está magna empresa de educar e intercambiar ideas y nuevos conceptos con nuestros colegas.

Desde los comienzos de nuestra disciplina, la Medicina Nuclear ha tenido que enfrentar competencias aparentemente avasalladoras de parte de nuevos desarrollo en las técnicas de imagenología, como la Tomografía Computarizada en los inicios de la década del 70 y más tarde la Resonancia Nuclear Magnética. Estas tecnologías desde un inicio aparecieron como una competencia demoledora contra la Medicina Nuclear. Sin embargo, el concepto de imagenología funcional complementaria a la imagenología estructural de alta resolución ha ido ganando aceptación y hoy día podemos ser testigos en nuestro congreso como ha llegado a su florecimiento y maduración la Cardiología Nuclear, que es un buen ejemplo del poder de las Imagenologías Funcional. La Imagenología del Cerebro en Neurología y Psiquiatría está rápidamente llegando también a su madurez al desarrollarse nuevos sistemas tridimensionales estadísticos de desplegamiento de imágenes. La Oncología es en la actualidad el área de más rápido desarrollo en Medicina Nuclear como lo vemos en este Congreso y en que PET y SPECT contribuyen fuertemente al diagnóstico precoz de Cáncer y a la imagenología de Receptores respectivamente. Esta área está especialmente representada en este Congreso.

En este número publicamos 706 abstracts que serán presentados en forma oral o en sesiones de posters. Se definen así las muchas áreas de Medicina Nuclear que reciben una contribución fuertisima de diversos países del mundo.

Alasbimn y Chile en particular estamos especialmente agradecidos de los innumerables contribuyentes a la alta calidad de los programas de educación continuada, a los autores de trabajos científicos originales, a los moderadores y co-moderadores que han ofrecido su apoyo generosamente y que nos proveen de una oportunidad especial para el intercambio y refresco de conocimiento de nuestra grande y diversificada base internacional de científicos que hoy en día están presentes en este Congreso Mundial.

Deseamos que el muy importante material publicado en este número esté inmediatamente a su disposición tanto antes, como durante y después del Congreso Mundial de Medicina Nuclear, para consulta y guía de su asistencia a las reuniones científicas.
