We undertook a postal survey of 200 nuclear medicine departments within the UK and received 75 replies (38%). Renographic workload varies greatly, from "less than 30 per year" (7 departments) to "more than 200 per year" (14 departments). Questions were asked about awareness and influence of three RIN guidelines relating to diuresis renography, captopril renography, and renographic measurement of renal functional. Results were as follows.

The responder was invited to cite specific changes in procedures. Supplementary questions were asked about particularly influential renography publications (apart from the RIN guidelines) and an opportunity was given to comment on the general value of guidelines in routine clinical practice. A summary of these comments will be presented. Some responders had not changed their procedures because they felt that they already complied with the guideline in question.
In conclusion, general awareness of the guidelines is only 'reasonable' despite fairly active promotion within the UK over the last few years. Impact appears low, in percentage terms, but some notable changes in practice had been achieved. More imaginative methods of communications (e.g. specific workshops, direct e-mail notification, web site availability) were suggested as means of improving dissemination and, thereby, standardization. Formal support/adoption by the British Nuclear Medicine Society was also mentioned as an important factor.
